Get to Know Me

Why did you become a mental health professional?

As a child who grew up in a traumatic environment, I learned that I never wanted others to feel the way I did. Once I reached college, I focused on psychology and counseling to gain more of an understanding of my past. I graduated from college and knew I wanted to be a therapist but felt young and sheltered being in Oregon. I moved to New York City to gain a bigger worldview and get exposed to a diverse city.

What are your interests outside of work?

My interests typically revolve around activities that make me feel grounded and engaged. I like to go running on the water, walk the dog to Central Park, and go have dinner with my husband.

What is one thing you do daily that supports your well-being?

I am a big believer in taking a nap! I try to build in time for an hour a day to close my eyes and recharge so I can remain focused. I also take the dog for long walks that he decides the path, so I never now where we will go.

What book have you read more than once?

I loved the book Running with Scissors, by Augusten Burroughs which is a memoir about trauma. As a person who grew up with trauma I am always drawn to other stories about hard subjects. As a result of reading the first book by him, I have since read everything he has written.

Favorite organization/non-profit?

I think my favorite organization is the Samaritan's suicide hotline. As a former volunteer, I have firsthand knowledge of how this organization helps and the lives it touches.

How do you recharge?

I recharge by building in alone time where I can be quiet in my own space every day.
