Get to Know Me

Why did you become a mental health professional?

I decided to go back to graduate school to learn more about psychology, child development, and mental health counseling to learn the skills and obtain education to enhance my natural desire to help others. I am a good listener, am warm and supportive, and use my life experience and education to work with others in a meaningful way. I have a passion for helping my clients become empowered, feel less helpless, and live the best life they can. I love my work.

What are your interests outside of work?

I am a very creative person and enjoy art, interior decorating and design, and music. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and love my rescue cats.

What is one thing you do daily that supports your well-being?

I meditate daily to gain clarity of thought, and talk regularly to my closest family and friends. I listen to my favorite music and like to do yoga and go outside for fresh air and sunshine as much as possible.

What book have you read more than once?

I read professional books and refer to them frequently. One of the most powerful books I enjoy is The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk. It is a book I have used in graduate psychotherapy courses, and one I recommend to clients regularly. The author talks about how trauma experiences often exhibit as physical pain and illness.

Favorite organization/non-profit?

I have adopted several rescue pets in the past, and have a soft spot for the organizations I adopted my animals from. (Pitty Love Rescue, Big Dogs Big Hearts, Hearthside Cats, Lollipop Farm). I am a real animal lover and admire those who rescue and take care of abandoned and sick animals and nurse them back to health.

How do you recharge?

I listen to all kinds of music and sometimes dance to recharge. My favorite thing to do is decorate, make decorations, paint and refurbish old furniture, and sing (for my own pleasure).

Do you have any pets?

I currently have two cats and a blue parakeet. I had two rescue dogs but they have crossed the rainbow bridge. I have wonderful memories of when my dogs Cali and Hannah were still alive and I adopted two young cats. My dream in life was to have cats and dogs that got along and were best buddies. My dream came true and I have many photos of the pets snuggling and playing together. My shepherd mix, Hannah, was very maternal and protective of the cats, Midnight and Snuggles. If the cats would try to escape, Hannah would immediately run outside and herd them in. She was a great dog and I miss her and her buddy Cali very much.
