My Therapy Style

My style of therapy would be considered eclectic although I rely heavily on psychodynamic approaches, family systems thinking as well brief solutions focused therapy. I sometimes incorporate the expressive arts into my work with clients (especially writing as healing).

Get to Know Me

Why did you become a mental health professional?

Lots of reasons—I have been influenced by my mother's work and legacy (she was a psychiatric occupational therapist and founded one of the first psychiatric halfway houses in DC in 1958). I also realized I wanted to work with people to support their learning, growth, and health in person rather than working "behind the curtains" as I did when I wrote grants and worked as a fundraiser in my late 20s, and lastly… I experienced many losses (deaths of parents and other important people in my life) from a very young age and I do my best to "give back" to other people in the midst of grief and loss.

What are your interests outside of work?

I enjoy music, dance, time with family and friends, spending time by the water (ocean on the west coast and rivers and creeks in the DMV), creative/personal essay writing, and reading (mostly non-fiction).

What is one thing you do daily that supports your well-being?

I drink lots of water, I take several walks outside (with my dog), and I unplug from social media throughout the day

What book have you read more than once?

I enjoy books of poetry such as some of Nikki Giovanni's books of poetry.

Favorite organization/non-profit?

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater—they are an amazing company both in terms of the ability and beauty of their dancers as well as their commitment to the community they are a part of in NYC and the dance education and teaching they make happen in NYC and throughout the US and the world.

Do you have any pets?

I have a funny little black dog (a dachshund mix). We met "online" at adoptapet.com and I have no regrets!
